[Breaking It Down] Angela Brown

In the fifth episode of Breaking It Down, I take a look at Angela Brown's blog. Please be sure to leave her some love in the comments for being a good sport! :)

Quick Summary

At-a-glance details help readers quickly determine whether or not the rest of the information is worth their time, i.e. categories, genres, formats, etc.

Tabs are sometimes a better alternative to sidebars, when the information needs to be quickly discovered.

Newsletters are muy importante.

Repetition in branding elements (thematic visuals, colors, etc.) keeps authors easily identifiable across the Internet.

This will be a ten-episode series. If you'd like to read details on the project, please click here. :)

Question of the Week:
What's one thing you love about Angela''s web presence?

Newsletters are great, but many authors do not do a very good job with them. You have to offer something of value to the recipient, and more often than not the first thing I see is the cover art of their book. That's not going to help with sales and downloads.

Hi, Carrie,

How are you?

Such an interesting series.... Angela always has a great ZEST for life and her larger than life personality is wonderfully infectious!

Hope all is well.... lets catch up soon!

I know, I know - I don't have a newsletter!
Best thing about Angela's presence is her genuine joy. You're right - her author photo is perfect.

Yes, newsletters are good. I'm always amazed at everything Angela accomplishes while working full-time and being a single mom. She's really an inspiration.

I love her blog. The colors drew me right in..beautiful! I'm going to head over now and explore more. And now all I can think is how I need a newsletter. haha.

I've chosen to not do a newsletter because I'm not good at them. I figured I'd do more harm than good by boring my readers to death. Not good.

Awesome! The colors make her blog very approachable. I love it. :)

Haha, yes! One more converted to newsletterism. *grins*

It depends on the situation, but you're right—they can't be another spam outlet. Before we worry about converting those opens to sales and downloads, it's sometimes best to focus on building relationships. :)

Yes! We must.

That's okay. I'm going to brainwash—I mean, convince—you one of these days. ;)

Yes! I love that author photo. She should plaster it everywhere.

Woohoo! No problem, Liz. I've made the videos into a YouTube playlist, and I'm making an archive page for the posts soon. :)

Bore us to death? Never!

But I understand the reasoning. If you're more comfortable holding off for a while, that's a-okay, too. :)
