Ketchup Time!

Ketchup Cup by by EvelynGiggles
Oops! I meant to say “catch up” time. It’s been so long since we’ve had one of these posts, I tripped over the words. ;)

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve had a busy couple of months. Copy edits, content edits, proofs, etc. It was like living inside a publishing whirlwind—deadlines and documents flying every which way—but you know what? I kind of liked it...

The process refined my book until it sparkled like a bare-chested vampire.[1] That’s something I could’ve never accomplished on my own. Plus, it gave me something I didn’t have four months ago: confidence. I’m excited for you guys to read Strength, though I know not all of you will love it. Heck, if nothing else, just let me hold it up in March and say, “This. THIS is what I’ve been working on for the past couple of years. It’s real!” ;)

For those of you who’ve asked, SSP has been fantastic. Honestly, I have no complaints. They’re a well-oiled machine—communicative, organized, and hungry. You’d think that level of efficiency would make them cold, but it’s the complete opposite. The pub has this down-to-earth, family vibe going on. It’s great!

Anyway, enough about me. How are you?

What’ve you been working on lately? :)

Have a great week, guys!
1. Just to clarify, there are no vampires in my book. I was being silly.

THE MISTAKEN Tour!

All right, ladies and gents. It's the day you've all been waiting for.

Nancy S. Thompson is in the house!

Kind of.

Okay, I lied. Her main character, Tyler Karras, is here, but he's... on the couch. Maybe I should explain. Ty had a little court-ordered therapy to attend to, so I asked if we could sit in on his session. You know, to get a feel for his story.

What? That's totally legal, isn't it? *Pause* Well, I won't tell, if you don't!

(Note: This is fiction and probably a perfect example of what not to do as a therapist. Entertainment purposes only.)
_______________________________________________________________________________________

Therapist: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, Mr. Karras. May I call you Tyler?

Tyler:  *looks down and snorts with a derisive smile and a small shake of his head*  Yeah, sure, Tyler’s fine.

Therapist: I'd like to spend this session getting to know you a little better. *looks at notes* It seems you've had a difficult time recently. Would you like to tell me what happened?

Tyler: *shrugs*  What can I say?  It started when my parents and sister died.  Car accident.   My brother was injured, got himself addicted to drugs and alcohol, started running with a bunch of Russian thugs.  Gangsters, really.  Mafia.  Then, on top of it all, my wife was killed, and with her, the child she was carrying, our first.  So yeah, it’s been difficult.

Therapist: I’m very sorry to hear that, Tyler. *scribbles a few things down* And how did all of that make you feel?

Tyler: *glares back*  How do you think?  Pissed.  Like I needed a drink.  A lot of drinks.   And a whole lot of payback, too.  Trouble was, one interfered with the other, and I made a mistake.  A big one.

Therapist: Oh? *leans forward* Have you had a problem with alcohol in the past? Has it… interfered with your life prior to this?
Tyler:  No, not prior.  Never. Except for my bachelor party, I hardly ever drank alcohol.
Therapist: I see. Well, why don’t you tell me a little bit about this mistake?
Tyler:  My wife, Jillian, got mixed up in a case of identity theft.  It screwed up her credit which prevented us from buying the house we wanted in time for our child—Jill was pregnant with our first.  Anyway, though the cops and DA knew who did it, they couldn’t arrest or prosecute the woman responsible.  Jillian asked my brother, Nick, and his Russian buddies to intervene, but I found out and called them off.  So she tried to take care of it on her own.  Ended up dead.  And I’m to blame.
So then I decided to go after that woman myself.  I promised to turn her over to Nick’s boss.  In exchange, he said he’d let Nick leave the business for good and wipe his debt clean.  He'd finally be free of them, like I always wanted.  It seemed like the perfect plan at the time, but because I was so…angry and drunk, I mistakenly targeted the wrong woman.  But by then, it was too late.  I knew what I’d done was wrong, but the Russians were holding Nick as leverage to force me to complete our deal.  Their freedom—all our lives—it was all in the balance.  And I was stuck.  I couldn’t turn over an innocent woman to be traded as a sex slave.  But I couldn’t just let my brother die, either.
Therapist: *swallows* So, what did you do?
Tyler: Well, um…  This is all privileged, right?  I mean, you can’t divulge what I say here, can you?
Therapist:  *shakes head*
Tyler:  Right.  Well then, let’s just say that…I did what I had to, but it didn’t work out.  Not like I wanted.  *hangs head*  Not like it should have.  *stands abruptly*  Look, I really appreciate your time, but…I’m not ready to talk about all this.  It’s still too…  It’s just a little...  Maybe next time.   *turns and walks out*
Therapist: *blinks at Tyler's retreating form* A-All right. Next time, then.

Ah! I love Tyler, and I love this book. As most of you know, Nancy is my pub sister and critique partner, so I was fortunate enough to read her book many moons ago.

Wow.

I was blown away. Seriously, I read the whole thing in one sitting. I highly recommend it. :)
  ABOUT THE BOOK:

Obsessed with revenge following the violent death of his pregnant wife, Tyler Karras pledges the woman responsible to sex-traffickers in San Francisco’s Russian Mafia.  In exchange, they’ll finally let his brother leave the business for good—with his debt wiped clean and his heart still beating.  But when Tyler mistakenly targets the wrong woman, he’s forced to protect her from the very enemy he's unleashed, and the Russians are holding Nick as leverage to force Ty to complete their deal.  Caught in a no-win situation, Ty must find a way to save himself, his brother, and the woman, but with the Russian Mafia, even two out of three makes for very long odds.

Visit Nancy’s blog, follow, and leave a comment during her book tour for a chance to win an ARC of The Mistaken!  Plus, 5 runner-up winners will each receive an ebook. :)

  EARLY PRAISE FOR THE MISTAKEN:

“A deliciously slow burn that builds to a ferocious crescendo, Nancy S. Thompson's THE MISTAKEN kept me riveted until the very last page. Tyler Karras is a complex and flawed protagonist, and his redemptive journey makes him the perfect anti-hero. This psychological suspense is a standout, and I can't wait for Thompson's next book.”
~ Jennifer Hillier, author of CREEP and FREAK

“Nancy S. Thompson's debut novel, The Mistaken, is a first-rate thriller full of hair-raising twists and turns.  Pursued by the police and the Russian mafia in San Francisco, brothers Tyler and Nick Karras are fascinating, fully-drawn, desperate characters.  The action is non-stop.  Thompson's taut, intriguing tale of revenge, mistaken identity, kidnapping and murder will keep you enthralled and entertained.”
~Kevin O’Brien, New York Times Bestselling Author of DISTURBED and TERRIFIED

“Fast-paced and emotionally gripping - once the ride begins, you won't stop reading until it ends."  ~Alex J. Cavanaugh, author of CASSAFIRE and CASSASTAR

DINYB Blogfest!

You know what I noticed a few weeks ago?

EJ Wesley's NA supernatural suspense, Blood Fugue. Talk about original cover art—wow! This book really stood out, and that's why I'm highlighting it now.

As part of the Did I Notice Your Book blogfest, I’m giving EJ a public shout-out. Let’s see how long it takes him to find it! ;)

  About the book...

“'Some folks treated the past like an old friend. The memories warmed them with fondness for what was, and hope for what was to come. Not me. When I thought of long ago, my insides curdled, and I was left feeling sour and wasted.'

Jenny Schmidt is a young woman with old heartaches. A small town Texas girl with big city attitude, she just doesn’t fit in. Not that she has ever tried.

Life has pummeled her heart into one big, lonely callus. She has no siblings, both parents were dead by sixteen, and her last grandparent—and caretaker—was in the ground before she turned twenty-one. She’s the last living member of her immediate family. Or so she thinks…

'We found my ‘grandfather’ sitting at his dining room table. An entire scorched pot of coffee dangled from his shaky hand. His skin was the ashen gray shade of thunderclouds, not the rich mocha from the photo I’d seen. There were dark blue circles under each swollen red eye. A halo of white hair skirted his bald head, a crown of tangles and mats. Corpses had more life in them.'

Suddenly, instead of burying it with the dead, Jenny is forced to confront the past. Armed only with an ancient family journal, her rifle, and an Apache tomahawk, she must save her grandfather’s life and embrace her dangerous heritage. Or be devoured by it."

Rachel Morgan's Cover Reveal!

Rachel Morgan, author of The Creepy Hollow series of novelettes, is revealing the cover for her compilation novel today.

The Faerie Guardian

Cool title, right? Just wait until you see the jacket. ;) Rachel has mad cover-making skillz--the 'z' is absolutely necessary--and I'm always thrilled to highlight her latest projects.

So, without further ado...

Ta da!

Title: The Faerie Guardian
Author: Rachel Morgan
Release Date: 5 Nov 2012

Protecting humans from dangerous magical creatures is all in a day’s work for a faerie training to be a guardian. Seventeen-year-old Violet Fairdale knows this better than anyone—she’s about to become the best guardian the Guild has seen in years. That is, until a cute human boy who can somehow see through her faerie glamour follows her into the fae realm. Now she’s broken Guild Law, a crime that could lead to her expulsion.

The last thing Vi wants to do is spend any more time with the boy who got her into this mess, but the Guild requires that she return Nate to his home and make him forget everything he’s discovered of the fae realm. Easy, right? Not when you factor in evil faeries, long-lost family members, and inconvenient feelings of the romantic kind. Vi is about to find herself tangled up in a dangerous plot—and it’ll take all her training to get out of it alive.

[This novel was originally published in four separate parts: Guardian, Labyrinth, Traitor and Masquerade. It includes bonus scenes at the end.]

Giveaway Time!

The bonus scenes at the end of the book are NOT written from the main character's point of view. If you'd like to win a $10 Amazon gift card, all you have to do is guess whose point of view these scenes are written from! Head on over to the cover reveal post at Rachel Morgan Writes and fill in the Rafflecopter form. There's a list of characters there that you can choose from. Good luck!

Reviews, Ratings, & Goodreads

We talked about receiving reviews last week. Today, I want to look at things from the other side. Who's up for a few questions? ;)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speaking of Goodreads, we had a nice discussion in the comments last week. Many of you expressed frustration over ratings that don’t match reviews, i.e. glowing praise with a three-star rating. It made me curious. How do you interpret the star rating system?

I see it like this:

★★★★★ – This book rocked! Probably a genre favorite. I’d definitely recommend it.
★★★★☆ – Pretty darn good! With one or two exceptions, I loved this book.
★★★☆☆ – Meh. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it. Average rating for this one.
★★☆☆☆ – Borderline suckish. I had serious problems with this book.
★☆☆☆☆ – Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate. *Hiss*

If you’re friends with me on Goodreads, you’re probably scratching your head. “But Carrie, you only leave 4 or 5 star ratings.”

That’s true, and I’ll tell you why. I don’t have a lot of time for GR these days, so I tend to rate in black and white. Did I like the book? 4-5 stars! Did I hate the book? I don’t bother rating it. *Shrug* That’s just me.

How do you do it?

Keep an eye on this post, guys. As the comments and poll results roll in, you just might learn something about your readers. ;) Have a great week!

P.S. Speaking of reviews (I’m on a segue kick), Strength received its first in-depth review on GR last month. ♥ One milestone down!
