[Linkage] X is for X-Factor

Note: My A-Z theme is linkage. Every day (at 7:00 a.m. EST), I'm going to list three helpful industry links per letter, and then I'll ask for suggestions in the comments—that way, we can pool our resources! :)
X is for X-factor:
No, not the TV show. Today, we're going to talk about the hard-to-describe quality that makes writing and/or promotions stand out.

What do you think makes certain writing/promotions stand out?

Excellent story. Nothing else helps unless a writer has that part down.

I agree with Misha - no amount of promotion can compensate for a substandard story! If only there was some magic Formula X for a perfect story. :)

Yeah, the book has to be good. And helps if the author is really connected.

Excellent sounding resources - thanks for the links.

X-Factor is amazing. Like the invisible man.

Ugh. Promotions. I'm terrified about that part.

HI, Carrie,

I thing originality. When a book or anything is promoted with an intriguing twist. We are imaginative beings, so coming up with a pitch that is unusual and exciting is the way to go.

That is why when the first time I was asked to do a cover reveal, I came up with my "intro" concept so it would be fresher and more appealing to my blogger friends.

Marketing makes my head hurt a little.

Seriously, there are SOOOOO many craptastic books that are on fire right now, so obviously, the story doesn't have to be good, and neither does the writing. It has to first hit upon some need within the reading public, then it must have the support of enough people who have a voice. And yeah, that doesn't necessarily sit well with me.

The sad thing is there are so many great blogs and I just don't get to them like I wish I could. More hours in the day--that's what I need!

An original angle makes a book stand out, esp. if the theme or genre is already pretty common. No one wants to read the same story a thousand times, just with different names and settings. Something needs to make it different from all the other Vampyre romances, post-apocalyptic stories, or YA contemporaries set in high school.

A great cover also makes the book stand out! If I see cover art that stands out from the current cover trends (like the headless character or almost-kiss), I'm going to think it's a worthwhile read.

An excellent story may not help you stand out these days, but it'll certainly keep 'em coming back! :)

Wouldn't that be nice, Nick? :)

Carrie Butler said...

Absolutely. :)

No problem, Trisha! :)

Not familiar with the invisible man, but it sounds cool!

It'll be okay, Ilima. We'll all help. :)

Hey, Michael!

Oh, absolutely. New and exciting things stir something inside of us, and rightfully so. As long as they're well done, I'm all for it.

And your intros are the best! It's no wonder people love them. :)

Sounds like the perfect excuse to organize! (After you finish reading my MS. LOL)

Because it's so filled with joy? :D

This is true. If they ever have a rant panel at a conference, I'm going to nominate you and Katie. You guys had some great ones this week! LOL

Same here! I hate falling behind. :(

I remember the launch for the Emotion Thesaurus. I remember it because I found out about the book when someone did a RAOK for me - and I then went on to do a RAOK for someone else. It was such a brilliant idea!

Carrie Butler said...

Oh my gosh, yes. That was the epitome of brilliant ideas! :)

Oh, absolutely. Originality, once spotlighted, really stands out. :D
