As most of you know, I dabble in three categories: Adult, YA, and 'New Adult' (NA). If you just winced at the thought of marketing a book with a college-age protagonist, you already understand why this blog was formed.

For whatever reason, there's an industry stigma when it comes to NA. We hope to change that. :)

Seven of us NA writers have come together (thanks to Jaycee & Victoria), and we're not resting until this category gets the recognition it deserves. Industry news, interviews, advice, promotion, etc. You name it; it's going down at NA Alley

...And I want you all to be there!

Our first post is scheduled for tomorrow, May 1st, so please head over and find your favorite method of following. Seriously. Don't let the fact that I'm staring at you all creepy-like influence your decision.

*Stare*

What about a giveaway? You like giveaways, right? :D

...Huh. It's true. I really do have no shame.

Okay, enough about that. (You know I get excited about new projects!) Let's hear from you guys. What's going on in your world?

What are your plans for May?

Have a great week!

Oh, My Hero!

This week I'm participating in a blog hop hosted by two of my NA ('new adult') sisters, Jaycee DeLorenzo and Victoria Smith. The instructions were simple: "On April 27th, post a picture of your hero with a character interview that has at least 5 questions." Shiny! I can do that. :)

Some of you will remember Wallace from Casting Call...

He's the deeply conflicted hero of my paranormal romance, Strength, and for the purposes of this 'hop, I gave him a worksheet:

Aww, gotta love him. :) So, what about you guys?

What's the hero in your latest book like?

Have a great weekend!

P.S. If you're looking for my interview with Cindy Hogan, you can find it here. :)
[Note] I purchased a Fotolia license for this image. (And if I end up going the self-pub route, you better believe you'll see it again. Rowr!) Anyway, I'd advise against reposting it. We want to be respectful of the photographer and model. Oh, and I'm pretty sure it's illegal. That is all.:)

An Interview with Cindy M. Hogan

Hey, guys! Guess what? Cindy M. Hogan’s second book in the Watched series, Protected, came out March 24th!  To celebrate, she’s touring the blog circuit and just so happened to stop by SYAW today. *grins* I managed to snag her for a few questions, but first, a little about Protected:

Back Blurb:
“She has the guy. The terrorists have been taken care of and she is on the brink of being popular. Life is GREAT! Until they find her. Now she must run and leave behind everything she knows, including herself.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome, Cindy! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about the Watched series?
I had this vivid dream about 4 years ago and couldn't get it out of mind. I thought it would make the coolest movie, so I wrote the basics down to give it to someone in the know. (I don't know anyone in the know, by the way) But the main character, Christy, just kept bugging me, telling me her story. To keep myself from going crazy, I had to write her story. The series is about a girl who discovers she hates who she is and wants to change that. She stumbles upon a politically motivated murder that forces her to change who she is. In the process, she must discover who she is willing to be. And, of course, there are two hot guys involved. You have to have two hot guys, after all.

Of course!

How long do you intend it to be? I know you’re already hard at work on the third book. I am smack dab in the middle of #3 right now. It is so fun. I just finished brainstorming the last couple of chapters and recorded my ideas for later. Hopefully, I'll have it done by the end of next week. *crosses fingers* #3 will end this series, but the main character will live on in a break-off series I have planned.

Sounds like you're going to be a busy woman. :)

What’s the best part about indie publishing?
The best part? Wow! There are so many, but as Protected comes out only 9 months after Watched and having the final book scheduled for only 7 months after that, I'd have to say the ability to get my books out when they are done and not having to be on a publisher's schedule of 1 per year.
Very nice!
Fast Questions!

If you could have dinner with any author, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you have? Shoot, that's easy. Veronica Roth. I would have a juicy steak, baked potato and green beans with a salad on the side.

Oo, can I get an invite, too? :D

My blog followers are hungry, too! What would you bake them to celebrate the launch of Protected I make the most awesome cinnamon rolls. Truly, they are to die for. I'd love to share their delicious gooeyness with all your followers.

Careful. They might try to keep you. *Grins*

Where are you from and what do you call soft drinks? (Pop, soda, coke, etc.) Inquiring minds want to know!  I am from Utah originally, but I've also lived in CA, OR and TN. I think your question is so funny, because when I moved from Utah to Oregon, everyone called it pop. When I moved to Tennessee, no one called it pop. It was coke. No matter which type of pop you were drinking, it was coke. Some girls I hung out with also moved there from Utah and we thought people were so weird there for calling all pop, coke. Now that I'm back in Utah, I almost never hear pop. Occasionally, I hear soda, but hear coke most of all. I think I still call it pop, though. Old habits die hard.

We call it pop in Ohio, too. ;)

...And who’s your favorite interviewer/paranormal romance writer, whose name rhymes with Keri Putler? Hmmm, Harry Potter?....oh, oh, I get it, Carrie Butler. Three cheers for Carrie Butler. Go Carrie.

:O Why thank you!

I May Never Wear Pants Again...

Wait! What I meant was, I may never write by the seat of my pants again. I think I'm turning into a Plotter...

It all started a couple months ago, when I was working on the synopsis for Strength. I needed to outline each chapter's plot points for a quick reference and decided to use index cards. That's when my obsessive, overly-organized side took over.

 *Shudder*

Needless to say, the whole project snowballed. I ended up including characters and places, too--and you know what? Those obnoxiously bright cards convinced me to formally outline my next MS! (On paper, that is, since it's all subject to change.) But I digress.

Troy asked about my index card method back in February, when I posted a photo of my cards on Twitter. My reply was crammed into 140 characters and didn't give much information, so I decided to expand it into a post. I know it's not an original concept, but doing this helped me. Maybe it will help someone else. :)

Quick Reference Index Cards:

  1. Buy colorful index cards. C'mon, they're stimulating. You can even color-code, if you want.

  2. If you're planning on writing these out by hand, skip to step #5.

  3. Bring up your word processor of choice. I use MS Word. (I can hear you hissing, Peggy!)

  4. Create a new document and change the page/card size to 3'' x 5'' (or whatever size index cards you bought).

  5. Make the first one a title card.

  6. The second will be a legend. Whatever you plan on abbreviating should be listed here. Remember, there's limited space. (Yes, the second card is legend... wait for it...)

  7. If you're like me, you'll want to use the fronts and backs of the remaining cards.
    •  On the front of each card, list the chapter, act (if applicable), significant plot points, and any designated hooks.
    • On the back of each card, list the chapter, act (if applicable), characters, places, and any additional notes.
That's it! If you're unsure how to format these bad boys, you can download two .docx examples here. I hope they help you as much as they've helped me! :)

Do any of you keep quick reference cards/sheets? If not, how do you keep track of things?

Have a great week, guys!

P.S. I can only imagine the search terms I'm going to see in my analytics from that anti-pants title...
P.P.S. My blogiversary is in May. I think I'll wait and do an artsy giveaway then. :)
P.P.P.S. ...dary!

The Hook Brings You Back

I was critting the other day, when an acquaintance called. The conversation went a little like something this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Acquaintance: What’re you up to?
Carrie: Just critiquing someone’s manuscript.
Acquaintance: Ah, is it any good?
Carrie: Yeah, the writer is great with chapter hooks. o O {Now leave me alone so I can finish.}
Acquaintance:  …And that makes it good?
Carrie: Uh, yeah.
Acquaintance: Why?
Carrie: Because the hoooooooooooook brings you baaaaaaaaaack! ♫ So, what's up?

Hook by Blues Traveler on Grooveshark

Yes, I broke into song (“Hook” by Blues Traveler) for the occasion—but if you think about it, it makes sense. What is your goal at the end of every chapter? To entice the reader to keep reading. Plain and simple. The real question is how do you accomplish that?

With hooks!

I know, you’re used to implementing them at the beginning of books, but guess what? There are plenty of hooks in that tackle box. You can use as many as you want. :)

I’m not saying every chapter has to end with a hardcore cliffhanger. You’ll probably want to mix it up a bit. Just make sure it’s compelling. Make the reader take that book to the bathroom! (You didn’t think I was going to go there, did you? *grins*)

Since The Hunger Games is so big right now, I’ll use Suzanne Collins as an example. This is the end of Chapter 1. Needless to say, if you haven’t read the book or seen the movie/trailer, overlook this quote:

“Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smoothes the slip of paper, and reads out the name in a clear voice. And it’s not me.

It’s Primrose Everdeen.”

Bam! I don’t know about you, but that made me want to keep reading. (And reading, and reading…) Finding just the right note to leave things on takes finesse. When I find someone who does it well, I’m impressed. :)

So, what about you guys? How do you know where to end your chapters?

Have a great week!

P.S. Whoa! I’m one follower away from 300! How did I miss that? I should probably do a giveaway soon. How about a blog header or a promo button? Maybe a chapter critique or a character doodle? I don’t know. (Sorry, I can’t do gift cards/books. I’m poor, and that’s not even a slight exaggeration.) Let me know if you have any ideas. The purpose, after all, is to thank you. :)

P is for Proud!

…Did you panic, A-Z friends? *Grins* Don’t worry. Today isn’t “P”; it’s “H”. I just needed a title to express today’s sentiments, and that fit perfectly. Why? Well, you might want to make like the Easter bunny and hightail it over to Lisa L.Regan’s blog first.

Go ahead. I’ll wait.

♫ I’m waitin’… drinkin’ my green tea… singin’ to myself… ♫
(That’s exactly what I did. See? I told you I’m worse in person.)

So, did you read the news?

Lisa, my rock star critique partner, just signed a book deal with Sapphire Star Publishing! *The crowd goes wild!*

Wondering where you’ve heard about SSP recently? I’d venture to say it was Nancy S. Thompson’s announcement last month. (Another one of my critters!) How awesome is that? I love these two to death, so please join me in congratulating them.

Cue the confetti cannons! :D

The Utah Conspiracy

Friends, we've gathered here in secret to discuss a very serious threat to the writing/blogging community: Utah.

Yes, the state of Utah. Everyone knows you can't throw a trade paperback without hitting one of its writing residents, but why is that?

Does it emit some kind of supernatural signal?

Do people flock there because the state resembles a thumbs-up and they like it?

Or maybe it's something in the water...

Sadly, we may never know why 93.47% of blogging writers hail from Utah. Worse, we may never know why I feel the need to make up statistics like the one just mentioned. All I can say is they're there, they're congregating, and...

I'm jealous. ;)

So, seriously, where's everyone from? I know Pegasus did a wonderful post on the subject a couple weeks ago, but I'm still curious. Show your hometown/state/country, etc. some love in the comments! You never know. One of your fellow bloggers could live just down the road...

In fact, they probably do, if you're a... a... Utahn. (Is that right?)

Anyhoo, I'll start! I'm from Ohio--you know, the place where you can yell, "O-H!" in any town and people will stop whatever they're doing to scream, "I-O!" *Grins*

What's it like where you live? :)

Have a great week, guys!

P.S. You know I love you, Utahns. ;)
P.P.S. Margo is having a book drive for Columbia High School. Check it out!
P.P.P.S. Thanks to Yelena for the Kreativ Blogger and Sunshine awards!
