Magic 8 Ball Meme

Today, I was tagged by the lovely Jaycee DeLorenzo to participate in her Magic 8 Ball meme. Since it's hotter than Hades and I don't have another post scheduled until Monday, I thought I'd give it a try. :)

 INSTRUCTIONS

1. Post the button and link to http://blog.jayceedelorenzo.com (following would be nice, but not required).
2.  Share an excerpt from your current WIP, perhaps something you're struggling with, are stuck on, or just can't "get right."
3.  Ask a question about your excerpt.  It can be something easy such as "What do you think?" or something more in-depth, such as "Can you suggest a better way to word such-and-such," or "How can I make the emotions in this scene more realistic?"
4.  Tag 8 people.

...Yeah, I'm going to cheat. Shocking, I know. ;) Instead of posting an excerpt and asking a question, I'm going to use a poll. This is something I've been meaning to ask you guys for a while, anyway:

Thank you! Here are my 8 tags:

Thanks for the tag. Maybe I'll cheat, too, heh heh.

Regarding the poll--I think it would be alright to have a different POV (or sets of POV) in following books. Why not? Mix it up a little!

You're welcome, Jeff! Clearly, I'm a bad example. *Grins*

I agree! :) Wait. Can I say that? Did I just influence the poll? Crap...

Everyone, look away!

I think that learning things as they are revealed to Rena is part of the appeal.
BUT, you are writing the sequel, and as you know the full story, maybe different POV's would tell it best.
(Was that a good bit pf fence sitting, or what!) ;o)

If it's third-person you're probably okay, especially in speculative fiction works. If it's first-person it's less likely to work well, almost unforgiving if the original POV is axed.

Glad to see "Why not?" is winning!

I think that's the trouble with series. They continue to grow and get more and more complex. Using only one 1st POV can drag the pacing down. It's a tough decision to make!

Hah! Nice fence-sitting, Iain. ;)

Another good point to take into consideration. Thanks, Patrick! :)

Me too, Alex. :) Have a great weekend!

I voted "Other" with the follow-up statement saying there would have to be a very compelling reason the series switched from one POV to multiple POVs. I'm not going to out right say it shouldn't be done, but it's incredibly unlikely I personally would find almost any reason really compelling. My first question would actually be, "Why isn't the first book in multiple POV?"

Carrie Butler said...

Good point! Your question brings to mind the House of Night series by PC & Kristin Cast. The first book, Marked, revolved around the main character. As the series progressed and other characters' storylines took shape, more POVs were introduced. It worked out pretty well in that instance.

I read about someone having a hard time switching POV's from book to book earlier this week. Glad to see most think like me...I don't mind at all.

Carrie Butler said...

To each his (or her) own, I suppose. :) I'm with you. Thanks, Ilima!

I'm a whatever works kind of person. If the story calls for it and it's done well, go for it! :)

...And you would have to tag me right AFTER I just scheduled blog posts thru the beginning August. *grumbles and stomps off to log back into blogger dashboard* :P

Carrie Butler said...

"Whatever works" is my motto, too! :)

What? I would never intentionally sabotage your blog schedule!

...Except just now. I totally did just now. *Grins*

Carrie you bad girl, lol. Cheater! Great poll though ;)

Carrie Butler said...

Me? A cheater? I simply chose to interpet the prompt differently. *Grins*

...Yeah, okay, I cheated. lol Thank you!

Lots of writers do this! Successful writers. I wouldn't sweat it!

Carrie Butler said...

That makes me feel better. :D Thanks, Lisa!

love this meme =)

depends on the story
if it needs to be broken out into multi pov, you'll feel it. maybe more stories are being told this time.

good luck!

Carrie Butler said...

Good point, Tara! There's always something to be said for writer's instinct. :) Thank you!

Krista McLaughlin said...

I think it depends. In the series I'm writing, the first book is from one character's POV and the second is from the other main character's POV. I think it can work. :) I'm not too sure about switching POVs every chapter. Personally, I find that hard to read, but I agree with Tara - trust your gut. :)

You have to write my point of view.

Carrie Butler said...

Only if I start writing thrillers. ;)

Carrie Butler said...

Oo, another good point! Too much back-and-forth can be difficult to follow. :) Thanks for stopping by, Krista!

I love playing with POV, multiply or not. Hope you're having fun, not in the heat, but while writing.

I hate playing by the rules. Most books don't play by all the rules we're taught in school. I say experiment away with your points of view, only then can you truly find what's best for your story. Hope you're having a great weekend! :)

Loved your poll! I'm open to it, but afraid to do it myself;-)

jaybird said...

Why not? If it works, I say go for it!

Cassie Mae said...

I hope you don't mind I said the word douche in my other answer ;)

Carrie Butler said...

You know, I really am having fun. I've been experimenting with POV the past couple of days. It's been a nice change of pace! :)

Carrie Butler said...

You know what, Michael? You're right! I just need to play around with it and see what works best. :) Thanks! You too!

Carrie Butler said...

Thanks, Jamie! :) I know what you mean. It's scary!

Carrie Butler said...

Thank you, Jaybird! :D

Hah! I knew that was you! ;)

Don't worry. I use that word on a daily basis. lol
