Are you pressed for time and need help figuring out which link to try? Choose the listening profile that best describes your working preference:
GROUP 1: You can't listen to anything with prominent lyrics.
- Rainy Mood (Ambient/White Noise)
- Adagio FM (Instrumental)
GROUP 2: You look for specific songs that get you in the writing "mood."
- GrooveShark
- MySpace Music (I know. I thought Myspace was dead too. Apparently, they took over Imeem.)
- Youtube
- (May I suggest E.S. Posthumus?)
GROUP 3: You need absolute silence.
- Hmm... well, you could always encourage your spouse/roommate to take an alcohol-induced nap—though, that's a bit extreme. How about ear plugs? :)
What do you listen to when you're writing, reading, editing, etc.?
P.S. Ever write/type a word so many times that it looks wrong? "Group" is messing with me today!

I'm all about music that puts in me in the right mood. I used to just make playlists, but I stumbled upon stereomood.com recently, and I love it.

Ditto on the ear plugs. I use those a lot. I know a lot of writers use background music, but for me it's peace and quiet. :)

Yes you have to have mood music - good idea to put together some links for we slightly older bloggers who may not be as into downloading music!

Coming in late to the party. As a Deadhead from way back, I love to go to the Grateful Dead page at the Live music archive (archive.org) and check out one of thousands of concerts that have been uploaded over the years (Lots of bands allow their shows to be uploaded there, worth a look). When I'm in a good groove, the music doesn't distract at all. If it does, I turn it off.

I only play things that will fit into my 8-track. That limits me.

I would say I am an absolute silence kind of guy. I think I have some kind of ADD because music causes me to daydream. I can't write and listen at the same time. :(
