Poll Results & Exploring Industry Terms

Hey, guys! Before I get to the topic at hand, here are the poll results from last week:
Results as of 10/07/12 @ 5:00 p.m. EDT
Interesting, right? I love collecting data like this. :) If you missed the discussion on the star rating system, be sure to check out the comments from last week's post.
So many different opinions!

This Week:

It's my turn to post over at NA Alley, so I hope you'll join me there. We're having a discussion about what it means to be "indie". ;)

(I promise not to mug you. It's not that type of alley.)

Have a great week!

P.S. I'll be moderating #NALitChat with E.J. Wesley this Thursday at 9:00 p.m. EDT. If you get a chance, stop by and say hello!

The poll results don't surprise me. (If only because I voted majority in all categories. Maybe that should surprise me?)

Clare said...

What surprised me most about this poll is that the majority answer was the reviews have little effect on reading choices. If that's the case, why do we review then?

JeffO said...

The question is...now what?

That's an interesting poll. How did I miss it!

And Clare raises a good point.

I'm so clueless when it comes to reviews. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't review anything, lol.

Hmm. Interesting results for sure. I wanna see Carrie's answers. :)

Victoria Smith said...

Very interesting results. I'm actually with the majority on many of them :)

Nancy Thompson said...

Interesting to see I'm in the majority.

Alex J. Cavanaugh, voice of the people! ;)

Ask and ye shall receive! ;)

How often do you leave reviews?
Sometimes.

What prompts you to review?
I only review if I loved the book.

Whom do you review for?
Both.

I review and/or rate at:
Goodreads. (Though, I have been known to do an occasional feature here.)

I rate books...
Even if I don't review.

Reviews & ratings...
Have little effect on me.

I wondered that, too. Maybe we're creatures of habit and we like to validate our opinions. *Shrug*

Carrie Butler said...

Now we take this information into account the next time we fret over ratings and reviews. ;)

I would love to see Goodreads (or some other website with a massive following) give this poll. I wonder if the results would shift…

Carrie Butler said...

Rejoice! You're not alone, Cassiopeia. ;)

Carrie Butler said...

Woohoo! :D

Carrie Butler said...

I believe we have quite a few likeminded writers/readers around here. ;)

Seems like I'm pretty well part of the consensus. Which is good cuz it means I'm not so weird after all. Off to visit you at NA Alley!

I love polls. :)

Caught you in the alley already.
(Ooo. That sounds kinky. LOL) :D

See you at chat. ;)

Fascinating! Thanks for posting the results. I was in the majority for most.

Hmm, very interesting indeed. It's that time of year for polls, isn't it?! I was surprised by that last bit about 40% saying reviews has little effect on them! Thanks for sharing:-)

Tara Tyler said...

awesome! esp noted the effect of a review on reading!

Donna Nolan said...

I missed this poll too. Looking at the results, I am with the majority on most of them. Very interesting results, indeed.

I love surveys. People can be anonomously honest. Not surprised at the results. Have to admit I nly leave comments sometimes too.

Melodie said...

Great poll - thanks for sharing the results!

JeffO said...

And I wonder of the key word here is 'writers'. I'm guessing that most of your readers are also writers. If we polled readers who aren't also doing double-duty, would we see a difference? You raised that question with regard to Goodreads, where I presume there's a greater proportion of readers to writers.

Peggy Eddleman said...

I love the results! So fascinating! I'm a huge fan of surveys. So fun!

Livia Peterson said...

Interesting results! I rate books at Goodreads most of the time but I use it mainly for my never-ending TBR list and to make friends from the blogosphere. Have a great week! :)

Thanks for sharing the results. I'm headed over!

The results of that poll are very intriguing. Some nuggets of data to consider.

David P. King said...

That's a lot of great data. It's good to have an overall view of people's reviewing habits. Thanks for putting this together! :)

Jessie Humphries said...

What a great poll! How do get these things done Carrie???

Lisa Regan said...

Interesting results!

Carrie Butler said...

Of course not! Butlers aren't weird. ;)

Thanks, Joylene!

Carrie Butler said...

LOL! I should've known better than to read your comment right now. I almost spit out my drink. xD

Carrie Butler said...

No problem, Empress King! Thank you for stopping by. :D

Morgan said...

I LOVE your polls, Carrie... seriously SO FUN. :D

Carrie Butler said...

It must be! Maybe it coincides with back-to-school time. :)

No problem!

Carrie Butler said...

It's a little less pressure, isn't it? :)

Carrie Butler said...

Well, I'm glad you're here now! :)

Carrie Butler said...

Don’t worry, Stephen. I'm like that, too. :) My Internet time is a chaotic blur of multi-tasking. It's hard to leave comments everywhere!

Carrie Butler said...

Thanks, Melodie! :)

Carrie Butler said...

Yes! I love to see everyone's opinions. :)

Carrie Butler said...

Hah! Same here, Livia. Goodreads is charged with maintaining my beast of a TBR list!

You too! :)

Carrie Butler said...

No problem. :) Thanks for heading over to the Alley, Michael!

Carrie Butler said...

Thanks for stopping by, Angela! :)

Carrie Butler said...

No problem, David! I enjoyed it. :)

Carrie Butler said...

I never sleep. ;)

Thanks, Jessie!
(Don't forget me when you're famous!)

Carrie Butler said...

Aren't they? It's nice to take a step back every once and a while. :)

Carrie Butler said...

Thanks, Morgan! :D

Every once in awhile, I will put up a Recent Reads post which has super mini reviews. Not even worth calling reviews as they're only a sentence to a paragraph long. I do try to rate every book I read though, even if I don't do it right away.

Clare said...

That's what my Hubby said when I saw talking about it. We discussed reviews in terms of video games (as that's what he does professionally) and he said often people want to validate their opinions or read that others agreed with their thoughts. When he said that I realised I often read reviews after I've read a book to see if my feelings were the same as the majorities.

Ok, seriously good poll. It's pretty interesting. I'm the worst at blogging and sometimes responding. And the dumb thing is I read a lot of blogs, I just sometimes don't have much to say that sounds intelligent. Well, really, that's most of the time. So I don't comment a lot. And when it comes to rating books I tend to rate them all the same. I'm the reason the polls are whacked out! ha ha.

Carrie Butler said...

I'm all for mini reviews! When I do manage to get something up on GR, it's usually <5 sentences long. xD

Carrie Butler said...

I'm the same way! Sometimes I'll even go as far as to type something, hit preview, realize it sounds stupid, and then delete it. LOL

Thanks, Erin! :D

Kelley Lynn said...

This is a super interesting poll. And perfect timing with my recent thinking about what to do with reviews. Thanks Carrie!

Carrie Butler said...

Good! :)

You're very welcome. Thank you for stopping by!

Lindsay N. Currie said...

Hmmm, these are fascinating responses. Thanks for sharing Carrie!

Carrie Butler said...

Thanks, Lindsay. :) No problem!

Sophia Chang said...

Totally - I never read reviews before b/c I'm hyper terrified of spoilers, but I love to browse reviews after.

(my guy works in video games too)

Carrie Butler said...

Yes! Those spoilers can be so sneaky, even when you try to skim. *Shudder*
