Poll Results & Exploring Industry Terms

Hey, guys! Before I get to the topic at hand, here are the poll results from last week:
Results as of 10/07/12 @ 5:00 p.m. EDT
Interesting, right? I love collecting data like this. :) If you missed the discussion on the star rating system, be sure to check out the comments from last week's post.
So many different opinions!

This Week:

It's my turn to post over at NA Alley, so I hope you'll join me there. We're having a discussion about what it means to be "indie". ;)

(I promise not to mug you. It's not that type of alley.)

Have a great week!

P.S. I'll be moderating #NALitChat with E.J. Wesley this Thursday at 9:00 p.m. EDT. If you get a chance, stop by and say hello!

  1. The poll results don't surprise me. (If only because I voted majority in all categories. Maybe that should surprise me?)

  2. What surprised me most about this poll is that the majority answer was the reviews have little effect on reading choices. If that's the case, why do we review then?

    1. I wondered that, too. Maybe we're creatures of habit and we like to validate our opinions. *Shrug*

    2. That's what my Hubby said when I saw talking about it. We discussed reviews in terms of video games (as that's what he does professionally) and he said often people want to validate their opinions or read that others agreed with their thoughts. When he said that I realised I often read reviews after I've read a book to see if my feelings were the same as the majorities.

    3. Totally - I never read reviews before b/c I'm hyper terrified of spoilers, but I love to browse reviews after.

(my guy works in video games too)

    4. Yes! Those spoilers can be so sneaky, even when you try to skim. *Shudder*

    1. Now we take this information into account the next time we fret over ratings and reviews. ;)

    1. I would love to see Goodreads (or some other website with a massive following) give this poll. I wonder if the results would shift…

  5. I'm so clueless when it comes to reviews. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't review anything, lol.

    1. Ask and ye shall receive! ;)

How often do you leave reviews?
      Sometimes.

      What prompts you to review?
I only review if I loved the book.

      Whom do you review for?
      Both.

      I review and/or rate at:
Goodreads. (Though, I have been known to do an occasional feature here.)

      I rate books...
      Even if I don't review.

      Reviews & ratings...
      Have little effect on me.

    1. I believe we have quite a few likeminded writers/readers around here. ;)

    2. And I wonder of the key word here is 'writers'. I'm guessing that most of your readers are also writers. If we polled readers who aren't also doing double-duty, would we see a difference? You raised that question with regard to Goodreads, where I presume there's a greater proportion of readers to writers.

  9. Seems like I'm pretty well part of the consensus. Which is good cuz it means I'm not so weird after all. Off to visit you at NA Alley!

  25. Every once in awhile, I will put up a Recent Reads post which has super mini reviews. Not even worth calling reviews as they're only a sentence to a paragraph long. I do try to rate every book I read though, even if I don't do it right away.

    1. I'm all for mini reviews! When I do manage to get something up on GR, it's usually <5 sentences long. xD

  26. Ok, seriously good poll. It's pretty interesting. I'm the worst at blogging and sometimes responding. And the dumb thing is I read a lot of blogs, I just sometimes don't have much to say that sounds intelligent. Well, really, that's most of the time. So I don't comment a lot. And when it comes to rating books I tend to rate them all the same. I'm the reason the polls are whacked out! ha ha.
